Ren Bailin, a native of Yantai, Shandong province, worked as a welder for a company in his youth, welding parts for excavators every day. In his spare time, he would find some metal scraps to practice welding skills, assemble them into tanks and aircraft models, and sell them at night markets, which are very popular. In 2012, Ren resigned from the company to concentrate on welding tanks and aircraft models for sale. He started with scrap metal parts he scavenged from car and motorcycle garages. The welded models were well received, but he wasn't satisfied because iron tends to rust. In addition, because the shape of metal parts is very random, the finished product is also different from each other, which is not reproducible and not efficient. In 2013, Ren Bailin began to use stainless steel as the raw material for making models, which not only solved the problem of rust, but also ensured the unity of the form of the raw materials and the replicability of the works. What he does most is tanks. A big tank can be sold for more than 2,000 yuan a week, and a small tank can be sold for several hundred yuan. In addition, he makes models of stainless steel excavators, which are popular with children and can be sold quickly in the antique market. But that does not satisfy Ren Bailin's ambitions. After the successful construction and sea trial of China's first aircraft carrier Liaoning on Sept 25, 2012, he began to try to make a model of the Liaoning out of stainless steel, but he was not confident in his technology at that time. It wasn't until 2015 that Ren was ready for the technology, when he rented a house as a workshop and started making the Liaoning. In order to recreate the details more realistically, Ren looked at numerous pictures and videos of the Liaoning and traded a tank for a plastic model of the Liaoning from a player in Beijing. Mr. Ren said the most difficult part of the process was keeping the hull smooth and beautiful, as each polishing would cause deformation, and he often had to shut down for months to study and test. After three years of hard work, the Liaoning was finally completed in 2018.
Ren Bailin's son loved the big toy, but he put forward to his father: "This thing is dead, can not move, can you make a toy car like that move?" Inspired by his son, Ren started building another "moving" aircraft carrier, this time imitating the new 004 nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Despite previous experience, this time the technology was more demanding, and it took Ren another three years. In 2021, Ren's 004 aircraft carrier model was completed, and this time it amazed everyone: the 1.72-meter hull is lined with various attack and fighter aircraft, which can take off from a "runway" by electromagnetic catapulting. Ren has equipped the model with a floating and propulsion system so that it can descend into the water, just like a real aircraft carrier. The "aircraft carrier" has attracted a lot of attention from netizens and enthusiasts, and many people have offered to buy it. Ren said the highest price was 500,000 yuan, but he has no plans to sell it. He said he had put too much effort into the model 004 and that it was not replicable, so he was reluctant to sell it. Recently, the video of the aircraft carrier suddenly went viral on the Internet, with many netizens marveling and even the official account of China State Shipbuilding Corporation saying: "Oops, my heart is moved." Another said: "Hurry up and recruit this kind of talent!"
